Hyped up NCAA teams and rankings: I told you so! By Tony George www.sportsaudioshows.com My weekly review of what went wrong and right in NCAA Football is a feature here. While I am never one to say I told you so, I simply must refer back to my August 21st article telling all who would take the time to read my article that the pre-season rankings bear little meaning in terms of pointspread expectations. I mentioned the huge number that USC was laying, who was clearly the #1 team in the nation, and that they would not cover a 46+ ponitspread with Nebraska on deck (even with a bye week in from of them) and low and behold they won by 28 points at nearly a 50 point favorite by game time. Lets breakdown both the good, bad and downright ugly.
The Ugly OK Michigan fan. Next time I am seen in Vegas in a sportsbook wearing Husker gear and a Michigan fan rolls up on me and starts in on how great the Big 10 is, and that my beloved Huskers should have never shared a title with you in 1997, start thinking "right here, right now". WHAT A COLOSSAL BLUNDER! Lloyd Carr has not only lost to Ohio State 5 out of 6 years and is coming off an ass whipping in a bowl game, you just lost to Division II-A Application State in the Big House! I said it last year and was proved right in the bowls games overall, the Big 10 is overrated. Michigan has allot to do with that. You do not get beat in your own house by a patsy unless you are not prepared, and Michigan was not prepared. That is a coaching error, have no illusions, and Lloyd Carr better go undefeated or it is his butt this season, especially if he loses to Ohio State again. I have said it time and time again, David versus Goliath is not a time to leave your "A" game in the locker room, there is parity in College football at all levels. THINK ABOUT THIS: When it comes to the Top 25 rankings Michigan was ranked 5th in the nation, just lost to a division II-A team at home and still will be ranked in the Top 25 in front of teams who won this past weekend that beat Division I schools. Shouldn't they not be dropped out of the Top 25 ASAP? I have not seen the rankings out yet, and it does not matter to me because I put NO emphasis on them whatsoever. Florida State also gets the nod in the Ugly department. Bobby Bowden hired 5 new coaches to turn around a stagnant program that is floundering. Start looking at the top Bobby, your time has passed. He hired Chuck Ammato, who was run out of NC State on a railcar out of past devotion, not for a specific need. Jimbo Fisher was hired as an OC and West Virginia's OL coach was also brought on board. How did that work out for the Seminoles in game 1? His son Tommy's team proceeded to dominate them in every aspect and whip them on national TV and for 3 quarters simply embarrassed Florida State. ANYONE with a strong defensive line will BEAT Florida State this year, not only cover a spread but beat them outright. Mark my words! The Bad Tennessee- Once again lost to a ranked opponent. When will people get the feeling that Phil Fulmer is not a big game coach? Many had this team as a dark horse to win the SEC. You just got wasted by a Pac 10 runner up by 14 points and looked bad in doing so. Virginia Tech- Although it was an emotional day in Blacksburg with all the tributes to the fallen student who died in a shooting rampage, you managed to beat East Carolina by 10 points in your own house, and averaged 1.1 yards per rush on the ground at home! Can anyone think that LSU is licking their cops? East Carolina was within 17 total yards of VT's offensive output for the game. Did anyone watch LSU's defense against Mississippi State last Thursday? Good luck Hokies! Notre Dame- As stated earlier, is a .500 ballclub at best. You just got hammered in a bowl game with Brady Quinn at QB which you should have never been in to begin with, and just lost to Georgia Tech, who is a capable team, as a home favorite by 30 points. Charlie Weis is overrated and Notre Dame is in for a bad year, shades of Jerry Faust are becoming less hazy! The Good Without going into great detail, many teams were impressive this weekend. Wisconsin (My Top Play of the Weekend) looked solid against a decent Washington State team, Michigan State, rung in Mark Deantiono's tenure with a 50+ point explosion (another one of my Top Plays), Sam Keller a transfer QB from Arizona State looked awesome for Nebraska at QB and might be the big time arm that Callahan at Nebraska has been waiting for (look out USC!). Wyoming and under appreciated head coach Joe Glenn pounded Virginia by 20 points at home, hats off to the Cowboys! Do not overlook Louisville this season again, the offense will put up huge numbers and QB Brohm is a top QB in college football. No defense for the Cards will be their demise, but they will score with anyone! Just a few takes and rants headed into week 2 in NCAA Football. Once again there will be loads of opportunity as the full slate of NCAA games kicks off this Thursday.
